Former BLACK SABBATH Roadie Talks About Working For OZZY OSBOURNE
April 5, 2004The News & Star has interviewed Dave Tangye, one of the authors of "How Black Was Our Sabbath", which looks at the band's exploits during their Seventies' heyday.
Tangye, 53, worked with SABBATH for three years and was later Ozzy Osbourne's personal assistant. "How Black Was Our Sabbath" was co-written with another roadie, Graham Wright.
"I call it the best worst job you could ever have," Dave told The News & Star. "You see life and meet a real diversity of people. It definitely opened your outlook on life. We were travelling first class, staying in the best hotels. If you weren't affected you wouldn't be human.
"I wouldn't call it a master-servant relationship. It was one big family. We were only in our mid-20s. We enjoyed ourselves."
Dave rejects any suggestion that he is jumping on the Osbournes' bandwagon. The book was planned four-and-a-half years ago, before Ozzy was born again as the world's favorite reality TV star.
"It's strange... Ozzy must be the top attraction in America at the moment in terms of exposure," says Dave. "He's the salt of the earth. Ozzy will never change. You can take the boy out of Aston but you can’t take Aston out of the boy.
"We didn't want to write a shock-rock book. You see a lot of books with a lot of profanity. We just wanted a good book, that would allow people who maybe weren't fans of BLACK SABBATH to see the workings of a rock band.
"We wanted to write a book about the Seventies, while coming back to BLACK SABBATH."
